There is a particular kind of excitement in booking a trip that was not part of the plan. No months of preparation, no complicated itinerary—just a free weekend, a small suitcase and a return ticket that costs less than an ordinary night out. For travellers based in Athens, late autumn and the beginning of winter can be an unexpectedly good time to look towards Europe, especially when lower fares meet cities that feel entirely different once the summer crowds have disappeared.
We searched for direct return flights from Athens for November and December 2026 and found six possibilities priced between €44 and €80 at the time of our search. From misty Venetian canals and Malta’s honey-coloured streets to Budapest’s thermal baths, each one offers a convincing reason to leave routine behind for a few days.
Price check: The fares below were displayed on Google Flights on 3 November 2026 for one adult travelling return in economy, on direct flights and paying in euros. They include mandatory taxes and fees but are basic fares, generally covering only a small personal item. Cabin baggage, checked luggage, seat selection and other extras may cost more. Airfares change continuously, so always confirm the final price with the airline before booking.
1. Venice: a winter weekend for €44 return
Dates: 5–7 December 2026
Airline: Ryanair
Airport: Venice Marco Polo (VCE)
Fare checked: €44 return

Venice may be one of Europe’s most familiar images, yet in early December it takes on a quieter, more mysterious character. The light softens over the lagoon, narrow streets feel less hurried and even a short stay can include far more than the usual passage through St Mark’s Square. Wander through Cannaregio in the morning, cross into Dorsoduro for galleries and waterside views, then stop for cicchetti in a small bacaro before the city disappears into the evening mist.
At €44 return, this was the lowest fare in our search. The schedule makes it a compact two-night escape, so it suits travellers who want atmosphere rather than an exhaustive checklist of sights.
2. Malta: history and Mediterranean light for €60 return
Dates: 30 November–3 December 2026
Airline: Ryanair / Malta Air
Fare checked: €60 return

Malta is an easy answer for anyone who wants a change of scenery without surrendering the Mediterranean completely. Valletta is compact enough to explore on foot, but layered enough to fill several days with fortified streets, ornate churches, sea-facing gardens and small bars hidden behind limestone façades. Across the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities offer a slower rhythm and some of the most rewarding views back towards the capital.
With three nights on the island, there is also time to look beyond Valletta—perhaps towards Mdina’s silent lanes or the fishing boats of Marsaxlokk—without turning the trip into a race.
3. Paphos: ancient mosaics beside the sea for €63 return
Dates: 12–15 November 2026
Airline: Ryanair
Fare checked: €63 return

Paphos works particularly well as a gentle November break: close enough for a few days, yet different enough to create the feeling of a proper departure. Its archaeological park brings Roman villas and intricate mosaics almost to the edge of the sea, while the harbour, medieval castle and coastal promenade make it possible to alternate history with long, unhurried walks.
The dates matter here. The previously considered 13–16 November itinerary was not available in our live search, so the verified option is 12–15 November at €63 return.
4. Bratislava: a small capital with room to breathe for €68 return
Dates: 30 November–4 December 2026
Airline: Wizz Air
Fare checked: €68 return

Bratislava rarely demands attention as loudly as neighbouring Vienna or Budapest, and that is part of its appeal. Its historic centre is made for wandering without a rigid plan, moving from pastel façades and hidden courtyards to the castle above the Danube. Cafés, wine bars and traditional kitchens are never far away, while the compact scale of the city leaves space for a day trip or simply a slower morning.
Four nights make this one of the most generous itineraries on the list. It is a good choice for travellers who prefer to settle into a destination instead of collecting landmarks at speed.
5. Tirana: colour, energy and a changing city for €68 return
Dates: 26–29 November 2026
Airline: Wizz Air
Fare checked: €68 return

Tirana is not a polished museum city; it is lively, contradictory and visibly evolving. Around Skanderbeg Square, traces of the capital’s Ottoman, Italian and communist past overlap, while Blloku has transformed from a restricted political district into a neighbourhood of cafés, restaurants and late-night energy. The city’s colour and street life reward curiosity more than a fixed sightseeing schedule.
Three nights are enough to explore its central neighbourhoods, visit Bunk’Art or the House of Leaves and, weather permitting, see the city from the slopes of Mount Dajti.
6. Budapest: thermal baths and Danube evenings for €80 return
Dates: 28 November–2 December 2026
Airline: Wizz Air
Fare checked: €80 return
Check the selected dates on Google Flights
Budapest is the most expensive option in this selection, but €80 return remains a strong fare for four nights in one of Europe’s most satisfying city-break destinations. Spend the morning among Buda’s hills and historic streets, cross the Danube as the lights come on, then warm up in a thermal bath or settle into one of Pest’s atmospheric bars.
The city has enough architecture, food and nightlife to support a packed itinerary, but its real winter pleasure may be the contrast between cold walks beside the river and the warmth waiting indoors.
Which escape would you choose?
The lowest fare does not automatically make the best trip. Flight times, airport transfers, baggage charges and accommodation can change the final cost considerably, so compare the entire journey before booking. Still, these six searches show that a spontaneous European break from Athens does not necessarily require a large travel budget—sometimes it begins with a €44 ticket, two free days and the decision to go.
